Beethoven’s
decent into total deafness was originally used by contemporary
critics to explain why his late works seemed so strange and
difficult at the time, rather than progressive and innovative.
By the end of the nineteenth century critical opinion had
reversed with many believing that much of Beethoven’s
genius was now thought to be because of his deafness, not
despite it. in this lecture (presented by the Melbourne Symphony
Orchestra as part of their Beethoven Festival) Peter Tregear
will explore why this extraordinary transformation came about
and how the idea of Beethoven as a deaf composer still seems
to haunt the way we hear his music today.

As
part of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s Beethoven
Festival over 500 singers from five Victorian choirs will
be joining forces at the Melbourne Town Hall to learn and
sing Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, culminating in a free
public performance of the powerful last movement of this incredible
symphony. Beethoven was completely deaf when he composed this,
his last, symphony. In collaboration with the MSO, musician
and educator Karen Kyriakou has created an Auslan (Australian
Sign Language) interpretation of the Symphony’s Ode
to Joy text to be performed by a Sign-Singing Choir to feel
and express this incredible symphony from another angle. So
on 20 August, when the Town Hall will see hundreds of singers
from all over the State join together with the Orchestra to
raise their voices in celebration of this glorious music,
the Sign-Singing choir (comprising Melbournians with and without
hearing impairments) will be raising their hands too!
This
is a full day activity, with rehearsals for the Sign-Singing
choir commencing at 10am at the Melbourne Town Hall and
the final public performance beginning at 5.15pm. An Auslan
Interpreter will be in attendance throughout the whole day.
